Catch Some Rising Stars
If you liked Steven Spielberg’s 2002 film with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks as much as I did, you’ll want to follow Frank Abagnale, Jr. on his unforgettable adventure all over again in Catch Me If You Can: The Musical at Theater Charlotte* (501 Queens Road, Charlotte). The high school and college actors of TC’s Student Theater Guild are putting on six performances, including two matinees. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students. July 11-19.
Low-Cost Lit
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is hosting another big book sale this Saturday, July 12th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Sugar Creek Library (4045 North Tryon Street, Suite A, Charlotte). The carts will be filled with fiction, non-fiction, children’s, young adult, cookbooks, and coffee table books. And prices start at only $1.00! If you need to make room on your shelves for new purchases, book donations are currently being accepted at all open Charlotte Mecklenburg Library locations. July 12.
Broadway in Boone
An Appalachian Summer is bringing a bit of Broadway to Appalachian State University’s* Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts (733 Rivers Street, Boone) on Sunday, July 13th. Tony- and Grammy-winning vocalist Heather Headley, accompanied by the Western Piedmont Symphony and a 12-piece choir, will perform selections from the Broadway and pop songbooks. July 13.
Wags to Riches
My wife and I adopted our dog, Millie, from North Meck Animal Rescue a couple of years ago. They’re a wonderful non-profit organization dedicated to finding loving homes for animals. To help fund their good work, North Meck Animal Rescue is hosting their Wags to Riches Casino Night Fundraiser on Sunday, July 13th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hunter House (412 Old Statesville Road, Huntersville). The event will include poker, blackjack, roulette, and a silent auction. July 13.
Monday Night Organ
The Sounds of the Summer Pipe Organ Series in Winston-Salem showcases the unique instruments and the musicians who play them. The next installment takes place Monday, July 14th from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ardmore United Methodist Church (630 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem), home of the Noack Organ. The program will feature organ pieces by Bach and others, as well as rarely heard early choral and organ repertoire, including combinations with a second organ and choir in the balcony. Admission is free. July 14.
Rumors Abound
Someone will need to get their story straightwhen Matt Merrill Productions brings Neil Simon’s Rumors to the stage at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall (207 Faculty Drive, Davidson). The 1988 farce is a masterpiece of miscommunication and comedic confusion. Recommended for ages 13 and up. Tickets range from $18 to $29. July 17-27.
More Monopoly!
Monopoly Life-Sized Travel Edition is a hit! People are loving the immersive take on the classic board game so much that its run has been extended through September 21st at Blumenthal Arts’* Blume Studios (904 Post Street, Charlotte). You become the game pieces passing “Go,” collecting $200, and maybe even going to “Jail,” as you solve puzzles, crack codes, unlock hidden clues, and complete a variety of challenges. Get your family and friends together for this fun experience! Through September 21.
Destination Festival
- Maggie Valley Arts & Crafts Show:Find artisanal creations and treasures, including paintings, pottery, handmade soap, burned hats, from across the Southeast. Admission is free at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds. July 12-13.
- Beaufort Water Festival: Ten-day festival with concerts, air show, Blessing of the Fleet, boat parade, sailing regatta, golf and fishing tournaments, arts and crafts, dances, and food in Beaufort, South Carolina. July 11-20.
