[Video] Farewell to Henry Janiec, Musical Pioneer

Henry Janiec, former Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Maestro and Conductor Emeritus of Brevard Music Center, died Saturday, October 17, 2015 at the age of 85.

The distinguished conductor led the CSO from 1958 to 1963, was a principle conductor for the Brevard Music Center for 32 years, and served as music director for the Charlotte Opera (now Opera Carolina) in its early days.

WDAV had the privilege of interviewing the maestro in 2009 during its residency at the Brevard Music Center. WDAV’s Frank Dominguez chatted with Janiec about his love for Strauss’ Don Juan and passion for the music.

NPR World of Opera to Broadcast Opera Carolina’s “Faust”

From an Opera Carolina press release issued August 23, 2010:
Opera Carolina joins the ranks of world-class opera companies with the national broadcast of its 2008 production of Faust on NPR World of Opera from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 11. Charlotte area listeners will be able to hear the broadcast on WDAV Classical Public Radio (89.9FM) or online at wdav.org.

WDAV Listeners Get 10% Discount on Tickets to "Love Notes"

On Saturday, February 20th, Opera Carolina offers a special Latin “Love Notes” benefit concert at the Knight Theater in Uptown Charlotte, and WDAV listeners can now take advantage of a 10% discount on tickets to the event. It benefits the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Opera Carolina, and features internationally acclaimed singers: soprano Olivia Gorra, tenor Israel Lozano and baritone Luis Ledesma. The program includes Grand Opera and Spanish folk music to celebrate Valentine”s Day “Latin style.”

Opera Company to Postpone and Cancel Productions in Response to Funding Cuts

From a press release issued by Opera Carolina on July 29, 2009:
CHARLOTTE, NC — The board of directors of Opera Carolina has approved a package of cost-saving and fundraising measures in response to the recently announced 33% reduction in support from the Arts & Science Council and current economic conditions.
