Is it acceptable to applaud between movements at classical concerts? Classical purists wouldn’t dare, but others make a solid counterpoint: silence between movements wasn’t always the tradition.
On the side of those supporting applause between movements is Marin Alsop, conductor of the Baltimore Symphony and Sao Paolo State Symphony. She reminds us that not only did audiences once applaud between movements, they applauded mid-movement at times as well.
