Charlotte Symphony Meets Its Year-End Fundraising Challenge

The Charlotte Symphony (CSO) announced today that it has received the $500,000 in gifts necessary to match a challenge grant offered in August. The half-million-dollar challenge, which had to be met by December 31, 2009, was pledged anonymously.

WDAV to Produce NPR World of Opera

WDAV 89.9 Classical Public Radio announced today that as of January 18, 2010, the station will take over production of National Public Radio’s World of Opera, keeping in place NPR’s successful creative team of host Lisa Simeone and producer Bruce Scott. WDAV General Manager Benjamin K. Roe is the new executive producer. The show will continue to be marketed and distributed by NPR.

Watch Your Radio 12/11/09: Cinderella and the Cranes

Below is the poster that announced the premiere of Jules Massenet’s opera Cendrillon at the Théâtre National de l’Opéra-Comique, Paris in 1899. The slippers at the bottom of the poster are golden, not glass. I can handle that. What perplexes me, though, is Cinderella’s interaction with cranes in the image. I imagine they are part of the French version of the fairy tale as mice are in the version familiar to the Disneyfied. But what’s she doing with that stick and why is one of the birds wearing pince nez spectacles? I’m digging around to try to learn more, but if you can tell me, please do so by leaving a comment below.
